Join us for a delicious and nourishing conversation on using children’s stories to foster cultural understanding, ignite curiosity about our world, and celebrate diversity. Speakers include Philip Lee, co-founder and publisher of Readers to Eaters; June Jo Lee, food ethnographer and author; Man One, illustrator and graffiti artist; and author/illustrator Shabazz Larkin. Participants will find new ways to connect young readers and eaters using their senses and diverse family food traditions.
A Certificate of Attendance will be issued to those who attend this webinar. A recording will be posted to Mackin.com for those who cannot participate in the live session.

Shabazz Larkin
Author and Illustrator
Shabazz Larkin is an artist and activist creating images of black culture and contemporary spirituality. He is the author/illustrator of The Thing About Bees: A Love Letter, a School Library Journal “Best Picture Book 2019.” Shabazz also narrated the audiobook and won the “Earphones Award” by AudioFile magazine. He made his illustration debut with Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table
and his author/illustrator debut with A Moose Boosh: A Few Choice Words About Food, both American Library Association Notable Children’s Books. He lives in Nashville with his wife and two sons.
June Jo Lee
Author & Food Ethnographer, Readers to Eaters
June Jo Lee is a food ethnographer who studies how America eats. She’s a national speaker on food trends, and consults with organizations such as Google Foods. She co-founded Readers to Eaters, a publisher promoting food literacy through stories about diverse food cultures. She also co-authored, with Jacqueline Briggs Martin, Chef Roy Choi and the Street Food Remix, a 2018 Sibert Award Honor Book for Most Distinguished Information Book. Her newest book is Sandor Katz and the Tiny Wild, part of June Jo and Jacqueline’s Food Heroes series. She lives in San Francisco.
Man One
Illustrator & Graffiti Artist
Man One has been a pioneer in the graffiti art movement in Los Angeles since the 1980s. His artwork has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including Parco Museum in Japan and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. He has painted live on stage at music concerts and festivals. He is the co-founder of Crewest Studio, a creative communications company focused on contemporary global culture. A lifelong Los Angeleno, he loved eating his family’s delicious Mexican recipes growing up. He made his children’s book illustration debut with Chef Roy Choi and the Street Food Remix.
Philip Lee
Co-Founder & Publisher, Readers to Eaters
Philip Lee is the co-founder and publisher of Readers to Eaters that is celebrating its 10th publishing anniversary. He also co-founded Lee & Low Books. Publishers Weekly in April named him and his late partner Tom Low among “the book business’s top 25 change makers of the past 25 years.” A Hong Kong native, his family immigrated to Los Angeles when he started high school. He got his start in publishing when he was a student working at U.C. Berkeley’s college bookstore. He lives in San Francisco with his wife and author, June Jo Lee.
Kia Heise, Ph.D. – Host
Mackin Learning
Kia Heise holds a doctorate in Sociology and taught in Los Angeles and the Twin Cities for several years before joining Mackin Learning. Her approach is informed by thousands of hours learning how to navigate discussions of social inequality with diverse groups of young people. She is also the author of the Little Sock picture books.
